Whales was born from a fascination with whale songs. The choreographic research began by listening to and studying recordings of humpback and bowhead whales.
The body is imagined as both a receiver and a transmitter of these sound waves. The act of listening — the ingestion of these songs — leaves a trace, a memory, from which behavior and language begin to emerge.
Shaped as a trio, this sonic imaginary serves the relationship and dialogue between bodies. Like a ritual, the dancers meet through a process of spatial and rhythmic desynchronization; the three figures shift and alternate endlessly, in search of a fleeting harmony.
Whales is conceived as an immersive experience, where the invisible presence of these grand, distant beings resonates through bodies and sound.
